The drama school audition process is one of the most competitive stages in an actor’s journey. Each year, thousands of aspiring actors compete for limited places at Australia’s leading acting institutions, including the world-renowned NIDA, WAAPA, and VCA.

To succeed, actors must arrive prepared, focused, and ready to make distinctive choices that set their work apart. This program is designed to help you refine your audition monologues, strengthen your performance choices, and develop the confidence and skill required to stand out in the audition room.

Admission to a leading drama school demands far more than talent alone. Successful applicants demonstrate technical discipline, intellectual curiosity, artistic individuality, and a commitment to rigorous actor training. This intensive 4-week program has been designed to prepare actors for the expectations of Australia’s leading conservatoires and professional acting programs.

Working in a highly focused studio environment, participants undertake a comprehensive exploration of the audition process while refining the craft, confidence, and professional standards required for competitive entry. Individual feedback, practical coaching, and conservatoire-style training provide each actor with the opportunity to develop work that is truthful, imaginative, and technically accomplished.

Program Outcomes

Throughout the program, participants will:

• Select, analyse, and prepare both classical and contemporary monologues appropriate to individual audition requirements.
• Develop a disciplined rehearsal methodology that strengthens text analysis, character development, and performance choices.
• Refine vocal, physical, and imaginative skills through integrated conservatoire-style actor training.
• Master professional self-tape practice, including technical presentation, framing, and performance for camera.
• Prepare for interviews, workshops, ensemble exercises, devised performance, and redirected audition scenarios commonly used by leading drama schools.
• Receive individual coaching and detailed feedback to elevate artistic and technical performance.
• Participate in a full-length mock audition conducted under professional conservatoire conditions.

This program is intended for dedicated actors seeking admission to full-time professional training and provides an authentic insight into the standards expected by leading drama schools.

Eligibility: Applicants must be 17 years of age or older.

Danielle Carter is one of Australia’s most accomplished actors, with a distinguished career spanning more than three decades across film, television, theatre and voice performance. A graduate of the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA), Danielle has built an exceptional body of work with many of Australia’s leading theatre companies while appearing in acclaimed Australian and international screen productions. Renowned for her depth, versatility and commitment to excellence, she has established an enduring reputation as a highly respected performer whose work continues to span the breadth of the performing arts.

Driven by a lifelong commitment to artistic mastery, Danielle has pursued advanced training with some of the world’s most prestigious acting institutions. Her studies at the Moscow Arts Theatre School, The Michael Chekhov School in New York, the Michael Chekhov International Workshops in the United States, and the Moving Dock Theatre Company in Chicago have positioned her among a select group of Australian actors with extensive international training in the Michael Chekhov Technique. This rare combination of classical discipline, international scholarship and professional experience informs both her performance practice and her work as an educator.

Alongside her distinguished performance career, Danielle is a highly regarded acting coach, educator and author. She has taught at Australia’s leading actor training institutions, including the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA), the Victorian College of the Arts (University of Melbourne), WAAPA (Edith Cowan University), and The National Drama School, where she is a member of the teaching faculty. Her work has also extended to Federation University and other leading professional training organisations. Her acclaimed publication, Racing Against Time: An Actor’s Handbook for Working in Film and Television (Currency Press) has become a respected resource for professional actors, while her latest book, Discovering the Michael Chekhov Technique: In the Studio with Ted Pugh and Fern Sloan, published by Bloomsbury Publishing, further cements her standing as one of Australia’s leading voices in actor training and the Michael Chekhov Technique. Through her work on stage and screen, and as master trainer in classical and contemporary text, Danielle continues to shape and inspire the next generation of professional actors both in Australia and internationally.

Preparation Prior to Course Commencement

To ensure each actor is ready to begin the work from the first session, participants are required to prepare the following prior to commencement:

• Select two audition monologues one classical and one contemporary, suitable for drama school applications.
• Read the full plays from which their monologues are taken and develop an understanding of the character, circumstances, and world of the text.
• Bring a printed copy of each script with all relevant sections clearly marked.
• Be familiar with the text and have begun the memorisation process prior to the first class.
• Research the drama schools and acting programs they intend to audition for, including specific audition requirements and expectations.
• Come prepared to discuss their monologue choices, including why they have selected each piece and what they hope to explore through the work.

Actors do not need to have fully completed their preparation before the first class, the purpose of the program is to guide the development, refinement, and performance of their audition material through expert coaching and detailed exploration.
