TRAIN WHERE THE INDUSTRY TRAINS – New York City.

AN EXCLUSIVE 10-DAY ACTING INTENSIVE IN THE HEART OF MANHATTAN

This is a high-level, professional development program for serious actors wanting to refine their craft, deepen their training and experience the professional world of acting from the inside.

Train at HB Studio, one of New York City’s original and most respected acting institutions, where generations of acclaimed actors have developed their technique. Alumni include screen legends such as Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Anne Bancroft, Faye Dunaway, Liza Minnelli, Sigourney Weaver, Claire Danes, Stockard Channing, Whoopi Goldberg, Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, Matthew Broderick, Jessica Lange and Barbra Streisand.

Many influential modern technique practitioners, including Susan Batson of the Batson Technique and William H. Macy of the Practical Aesthetics Technique, are also alumni of HB Studio. This is where their own technique training began, continuing the legacy established by legendary teachers Herbert Berghof and Uta Hagen.

Over five intensive days, students will work with master instructors on the craft of truthful, emotionally connected performance, training in the very environment where some of the greatest actors in film and theatre have developed their craft.

The HB Studio training culminates in a curated Meet & Greet / General Audition / Go-See with a panel of New York casting directors, giving students the opportunity to put their training into practice, in a professional casting environment.

BEYOND THE TRAINING ROOM

The NYC Intensive extends beyond the studio, immersing students in the professional worlds of film, television and theatre and giving them firsthand experiences that connect their training to the industry.

At NBC Studios, students will go behind the scenes of one of the world’s most recognised television networks, gaining insight into the scale, precision and collaboration behind professional film and television production. They will see firsthand the environment in which actors work and how performance connects with directors, cameras, writers, sound, lighting and production teams.

Students will also experience a top-tier Broadway production, stepping inside one of the most prestigious theatre communities in the world. Watching exceptional performers live on stage provides an invaluable opportunity to observe professional acting at the highest level, from character and voice to physicality, timing, presence and ensemble work.

The program also includes Shakespeare in the Park at the legendary Delacorte Theater in Central Park, one of the world’s most iconic open-air theatres and a cornerstone of New York’s theatrical history.

For more than six decades, the Delacorte has welcomed some of the greatest actors of stage and screen, including Meryl Streep, Denzel Washington, Al Pacino, James Earl Jones, Morgan Freeman, Kevin Kline, Natalie Portman, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Patrick Stewart, Christopher Walken, Anne Hathaway and Sam Waterston.

For an actor, there is something profoundly inspiring about sitting in this extraordinary theatre and watching Shakespeare performed under the New York sky, on a stage where so many legendary actors have stood before them.

It is an experience that connects students not only with Shakespeare, but with the history, tradition and extraordinary calibre of New York theatre. To witness world-class actors bringing Shakespeare to life in this setting is, in itself, a masterclass in the craft of acting.

YOUR NEW YORK EXPERIENCE

The program includes 4-star accommodation at the historic Belleclaire Hotel in the beautiful Upper West Side, placing students in the heart of New York’s cultural and creative landscape, just a five-minute walk from Central Park.

Your experience includes return airfares, 4-star accommodation, cultural activities, daily breakfast, a welcome dinner and return airport transfers.

Throughout the Intensive, students are accompanied and supported by Craig and Dominique McMahon, providing mentorship, guidance and on-the-ground support throughout their time in New York.

This is an immersive and professionally driven experience designed to take students well beyond the traditional acting classroom, combining elite training, industry exposure, cultural experiences and the opportunity to experience New York as a working actor.

For serious actors, this is an opportunity to train where some of the industry’s best have trained, experience the worlds in which they work, and be seen by those who help shape the industry.

Entry is strictly limited to ensure focused, high-impact training. Places are extremely limited.

Immerse yourself in Uta Hagen’s Approach to Acting, in the artistic home where Uta taught her legendary Professional class for more than 50 years.

Experience the depth and value of Uta Hagen’s Object Exercises and Scene Study process. Led by HB Studio faculty who trained directly with Uta Hagen, we will explore the infinite potential of the exercises in the actor’s practice, and apply the same rigorous values to scene work. Through participation and discussion, we see the individual talent revealed and released through this approach.

The Uta Hagen Institute’s Hagen Lab is an intensive, five-day program where artists from around the world come to continue their professional development. The program is designed to serve actors who wish to explore and expand their understanding and experience of Uta Hagen’s approach to acting.

“In my studio, we teach the truth.” ~ Herbert Berghof

HB Studio Alumni – Robert De Niro and Al Pacino.

The Extremely Practical Exercises found in Uta Hagen’s world-famous Books, Respect for Acting and A Challenge for the Actor, probe the depths and height of human behaviour.

They offer the actor a structure for lifelong practice exploring the dynamic interaction between sensory/emotional experience and the creative imagination. They hone the actor’s ability to actively live through the circumstances of the play and the character’s dilemma. When the work becomes a part of the actor’s process, unpremeditated truthful behavior replaces cliché and easy sentiment in performance. The actor grows to honour an authentic, present and intuitively responsive self in the role while making imaginative choices that serve the play.

Upon registration, you will be given guidelines on how to prepare for the workshop. Rehearsal outside class is required.

“…An organic transference of oneself to the role, the development of a new “I” who is alive in the world of the play, involves a creative process which is not a willy-nilly, loose way of working that depends solely on intuitive or elusive inspiration. On the contrary, it is a process which, however slow and painstaking, can be structured in an orderly way over which the actor has control, although no part of it is mechanical… It is a true challenge of one’s diligence and one’s talent. This process is to me like the drafting of a musical score in which the actor composes the character’s theme, orchestrates it, defines the phrases, individual beats, and the arrangement of the notes he will eventually play with spontaneity at each performance, putting to use his finely honed inner and outer techniques.” – Uta Hagen, A Challenge for the Actor © 1991, by Uta Hagen, All Rights Reserved.
