The Stanislavski System: The Foundation of Modern Acting

The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art’s Stanislavski Intensive is an immersive training program where actors from around the world come to deepen their professional practice through the principles of Russian actor, director and theatre practitioner, Constantin Stanislavski. Designed for actors seeking to strengthen their craft, the intensive explores the System that revolutionised modern acting and continues to form the foundation of professional actor training throughout the world.

The Stanislavski System encourages actors to pursue truthful, purposeful action rather than imitate emotion. Through a disciplined process of script analysis, imaginative exploration, physical action and psychological investigation, actors learn to create performances that are authentic, emotionally connected and grounded in genuine human behaviour.

Academy Award-winning RADA graduate Jessie Buckley is widely regarded as one of the most exceptional and fearless actors of her generation, celebrated for her remarkable versatility across stage, film, and television. Her honours include an Academy Award, BAFTA Award, Golden Globe Award, Critics Choice Award, Olivier Award, and Irish Film & Television Academy (IFTA) Award. Buckley has captivated audiences with acclaimed performances in Women Talking, The Lost Daughter, I’m Thinking of Ending Things, Wild Rose, Men, Fingernails, Wicked Little Letters, and The Bride! Equally at home on the stage, Buckley is renowned for her extraordinary emotional depth, magnetic screen presence, and fearless commitment to every role, establishing herself as one of the most acclaimed and sought-after performers working today.

The Stanislavski System is one of the world’s most influential approaches to actor training, empowering performers to create truthful, emotionally authentic, and psychologically rich characters.

Throughout the intensive, participants investigate Stanislavski’s core principles, including the Given Circumstances, the Magic If, Objectives, Actions, Obstacles, Units and Beats, Subtext, Tempo-Rhythm, the Through-Line of Action, and the Super-Objective. Voice, movement, scene study and on-camera performance are all explored through the lens of Stanislavski’s belief that the actor must live truthfully under imaginary circumstances.

The work challenges actors to replace theatrical habits and external demonstration with honest human behaviour, deep listening, and imaginative responsiveness. As Stanislavski’s process becomes integrated into the actor’s craft, performance becomes more spontaneous, psychologically truthful and emotionally alive, allowing actors to develop a disciplined and repeatable approach to creating compelling characters for both stage and screen.

“The actor must learn to think as the character thinks and act as the character would act.”
— Constantin Stanislavski, An Actor Prepares

Upon registration, participants will receive preparation guidelines prior to the commencement of the intensive. Actors are expected to prepare assigned material in advance, with rehearsal and script analysis outside of class forming an essential part of the training process.

Tony, Emmy, and Grammy Award-winning RADA graduate Cynthia Erivo is one of the world’s most celebrated performers. She rose to international acclaim for her Tony Award-winning performance in The Color Purple, earning the Tony Award, Grammy Award, and Emmy Award for the production. Erivo has also received multiple Academy Award, Golden Globe, BAFTA, and Screen Actors Guild Award nominations for her acclaimed performances in Harriet and Wicked. Renowned for her extraordinary versatility across stage and screen, Erivo has established herself as one of the most accomplished performers of her generation.
