Not to be confused with celebrated playwright Anton Chekhov; Michael is Anton’s nephew who became a renowned actor, director and creator of the Michael Chekhov acting technique.

Taught at some of the world’s leading institutions, including RADA, Juilliard and the David Geffen School of Drama at Yale, the Michael Chekhov Technique is internationally recognised as one of the most transformative approaches to actor training. Melbourne actors are incredibly fortunate to have direct access to Melbourne-based Danielle Carter, a highly acclaimed actor, published author and leading expert in the technique, whose expertise is sought around the world.

Designed specifically for screen actors, this practical workshop introduces the powerful tools of the Michael Chekhov Technique and shows how they can be applied directly to film, television, and self-tape work. Learn how to create compelling characters, access imaginative choices quickly, and bring greater authenticity, depth, and presence to the camera.

Through the use of your creative Imagination, you’ll discover techniques that help you move beyond overthinking and deliver confident, truthful, and dynamic performances on screen.

Danielle Carter is one of Australia’s most accomplished actors, with a distinguished career spanning more than three decades across film, television, theatre and voice performance. A graduate of the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA), Danielle has built an exceptional body of work with many of Australia’s leading theatre companies while appearing in acclaimed Australian and international screen productions. Renowned for her depth, versatility and commitment to the craft, she has established an enduring reputation as a highly respected performer and educator.

Central to Danielle’s practice is her extensive study and ongoing scholarship in the Michael Chekhov Technique. Her international training has taken her to the Moscow Art Theatre School, the Michael Chekhov School in New York, Michael Chekhov International (MICHA) workshops in the United States, and the Moving Dock Theatre Companyin Chicago. Of particular significance is her work with renowned Michael Chekhov master teachers Ted Pugh and Fern Sloan, whose teaching and extraordinary legacy became the subject of Danielle’s most recent book, Discovering the Michael Chekhov Technique: In the Studio with Ted Pugh and Fern Sloan, published internationally by Bloomsbury Publishing.

This sustained engagement with the Chekhov work, as actor, practitioner, teacher, author and scholar, places Danielle among Australia’s most deeply experienced practitioners of this internationally recognised psychophysical approach to actor training. She is currently undertaking her PhD, further extending her research and contribution to contemporary actor training and performance practice.

Alongside her performance career, Danielle is a highly regarded acting coach and educator. She has taught at many of Australia’s foremost actor-training institutions, including NIDA, the Victorian College of the Arts (University of Melbourne), WAAPA (Edith Cowan University) and The National Drama School.

Danielle is the author of Racing Against Time: An Actor’s Handbook for Working in Film and Television (Currency Press), a respected resource for actors working professionally on screen. Her latest publication, Discovering the Michael Chekhov Technique, brings decades of Chekhov practice and pedagogy into conversation with the contemporary actor, further establishing Danielle’s contribution to the teaching and preservation of this important body of work.
